THE Captain's Day at the Worcestershire Golf Club attracted 185 members who were intent on making impressive performances and the captain Simon Tinkler was not disappointed.

There is no doubt that the early morning players had the best of the weather as scores were of a high order. The captain returned a very creditable 36 Stableford points to equal par for the course.

Those players who set off in mid afternoon returned to the clubhouse a little wet. They had endured the worst of the conditions and as they struggled in the recurrent heavy showers.

In Division One the standard was high order and the first five players all returned scores well below par for the course. Gerald Bird (fifth) and Steve Bradshaw (fourth) could only be separated on the count back system, as they both returned with 39 points, three points better than par.

Experienced golfers Allan Boyd and Bruce Duncan fought a keen fight for second and third place. Allan gained second place with a score of 43 points, one point better than Bruce.

The winner of Division One with the excellent score of 43 points was senior golfer John Farley. Wes Curtis also played excellent golf to score 35 gross points and walk away with the day's best gross prize.

Competition was equally keen in Division Two. Marcus Hibbert (fourth) and Chris Wheeler (fifth) both returned with 37 points. The count back system was also used to separate the second and third players both on 38 points, Ewan McClelland was second and senior golfer Brian Vincent was third.

The winner of Division Two, with the very creditable score of 41 points, five points below par, was Paul Butler.

During the competition the club captain arranged special prizes for the players nearest the pin at the three short holes and those players nearest the pin in two strokes at the par four 18th hole.

At the third hole, Colin Lane from Division One and John Flanagan from Division Two were the winners. Simon Eales and John Houston were successful at the 5th hole and Andy Dunster and Mike Holt at the 15th hole. Gerald Bird from Division One and Roger Bradley from Division Two were nearest the pin at the par four 18th hole.

In the recent Ladies' Stableford competition Pauline Belsham headed Division One with a par round of 36 points. Pauline edged in front of Ruth Scott who came second with 33 points, the same score as former lady captain June Jones, who came third.

In Division Two the standard of golf was high, two players, Vicky Lane and Feya Recordon-Durksz, returned identical score of 40 points, four points below par. On the count back system Vicky was placed first and Feya second. Third place went to Cynthia Guest with a two point better than par score of 38 points.

In Division Three, first and second place players returned a score of 37 points. Barbara Teale was placed first and Faith Tubb second. Teresa Jackson was third.

In the Veteran's Cup, restricted to ladies who own up to being over the age of 60, the standard of play was excellent and four former lady captains were in the first seven.

Former captain, Pat Fletcher, was placed seventh with 35 points one point behind former lady captain, Jean Coleman, who came sixth. Margaret Bellamy was fifth also with 36 points. Former lady captain, Pat Longley was fourth also with 36 points, one point less than Joan Haworth (third).

The outstanding performances of the day went to Vanessa Chest-erton (second) and Betty Mitchell (first) both with 40 points. The rules of the competition state that in the event of a tie on points a play off has to take place, so the winner of the Veterans' Cup has yet to be declared.

Many male club members will envy the hole in one achievement of the lady vice-captain Jane Tromans, who recently achieved the feat at the 8th hole.
