Rondo of the Waves - Sibelius. Lahti Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Osmo Vanska. BIS-CD-1445 STEREO.

Ask people what they know about Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), and the reply will likely be Finlandia, his best-known work.

However, The Oceanides, a tonal poem for a large orchestra written in 1914, is a true example of Sibelius' passion for detail and precision.

Commisioned by Yale University, the music was first performed in New Haven, Connecticut, US, in June 1914.

This was a complete re-write of the piece originally despatched in March, of that year.

Sibelius, after sending the work, beganchanges without delay. The key was altered from D flat major to D; the themes were re-ordered and new material was added.

This CD has recordings of the Yale original and of the later, altered compositions.

Osmo Vanska, the conductor and the Swedish record label BIS have steadily been collecting an archive of recordings of the composer's works.

Rondo of the Waves covers some of the more obscure, rarely heard, compositions, and marks the last in a series of recordings of the Finnish composers work.
