THE behaviour of drunken pub and clubgoers captured by security cameras in Worcester should disgust residents of the Faithful City.

The scenes of life - or rather, low life - in the city late at night have deeply shocked councillors, and rightly so.

Reactions like "it happens", or "that's how youngsters behave today", or even "well, what can you expect" are totally unacceptable.

CCTV filmed alcohol-fuelled scenes of men and women urinating in the street, young women vomiting over railings and collapsing in the street, and incidents of fighting.

Councillor David Clark has it absolutely correct when he says that citizens and visitors should not be exposed to such mindless, yobbish conduct.

So what's to be done? Certainly, more bobbies on the night-time beat would be one popular measure.

The council can play its part by consulting the police, licensees and other groups to draw up a policy.

It can then consider draconian measures such as blocking more licensed premise in areas considered to have enough late-night venues, or restricting opening hours.

That, of course, would take time - and, meanwhile, ordinary city folk will have to live with such scenes of filth.

We believe action to tackle the problem has to be taken - and the sooner the better.
