ANGRY and frustrated market traders are looking to revolt and set up their stalls in Market Place despite facing a large fine or a ban from working in Redditch.

Stallholders are determined to make a stand after months of seeing their businesses dwindle following their move to the new purpose-built area behind Debenhams.

Traders have since launched a campaign and gained a 900-name petition to move back to the popular Market Place, where stalls were temporarily located.

At a full council meeting on May 12, it was decided to seek planning permission to allow stallholders to spill out into Market Place and Alcester Street for three days a week.

But market traders association chairman Paul McIntyre said they had not heard anything formally from the council since the meeting, adding stallholders were fed up.

Mr McIntyre said some traders were happy in the new market and did not want to rock the boat.

But he said if six or more traders were prepared to make a stand, they would go back out to Market Place.

A couple of traders who had taken their stalls back to Market Place were sent written warnings from the council stating they could face a £1,000 fine or be kicked out of Redditch.

But Mr McIntyre said there were some traders prepared to take the risk.

The executive committee is meeting tonight to seek clarification on the decision made on May 12.
