THE landmark timepiece outside the Golden Cross public house was given a new lease of life when clock makers JB Joyce and Co visited town.

Tower clock maker Brian Parry said: "We're refurbishing the clock and updating it with the latest modern equipment. The clock will automatically go back or forward an hour when it needs to."

Brian used a cherry picker to get up to the clock, mounted on the High Street pub, and spent most of last Wednesday working on it.

Wetherspoons area manager Nick Mathias said: "We wanted to put something back into the community by restoring the old clock."

The dial will look the same as the old one but the glass is being replaced with Perspex. JB Joyce and Co are the oldest clock makers in the world and are based in Whitchurch, Shropshire.
