A "LIFELINE" post office will definitely shut on July 28 despite vigorous protests from residents, councillors and Redditch MP Jacqui Smith.

The Post Office announced this week it will axe its Beoley Road West branch in St George's as part of a 'restructuring' of its network.

An official announcement on the fate of another post office in Rectory Road, Headless Cross, will also be made in the next couple of weeks.

Both post offices serve elderly customers.

The Post Office says falling customer numbers and the transfer of benefit payments from pass books to bank accounts prompted the move.
