TRIBUTES have been paid to a former canon of Worcester Cathedral who died in Pershore Cottage Hospital after battling against cancer.

Canon Robert Gibbs, aged 60, served in parishes around the diocese and was Rural Dean of Kidderminster from 1983 to 1989.

He was originally from Surrey and was educated at Durham University and Westcott House Cambridge and first moved to Worcestershire in 1982, when he became rector of Ribbesford with Bewdley and Dowles.

In 1983 he became Rural Dean of Kidderminster and was appointed Canon of Worcester Cathedral in 1987.

Mr Gibbs moved to Devon in 1991, but moved back to Worcestershire in retirement, and lived in Fladbury, where he had permission to officiate in the parish.

Mr Gibbs is survived by his widow Kathleen, who works at Holland House, Cropthorne, three daughters Elizabeth, Anita and Clare, and two grandchildren, Charlie and Katie.

A funeral service will take place at Fladbury Church, on Friday, June 6, at 11.30am.
