MARK Gabey has made a big impact since his move to Worcester Rugby Club but at 19 stone it's no surprise!

The former Bath back row star arrived at Sixways in the summer but has only been involved in two out of Worcester's three opening league matches bec-ause of a knee operation.

However, after playing 60 minutes in Worcester's 35-10 win over Orrell at lock, the 29-year-old starred in the back row at Otley on Saturday in the Warriors' 62-24 victory.

And for coach Andy Keast, Gabey's big impact is no shock.

"He's a good footballer," he said. "In all areas he is impressive.

His sheer physical presence is huge and when the game opens out, he's got the skill to go with it.

"He's settled in very well for us considering he's coming back from a knee operation in the summer.

"He's worked hard at his fitness and has come back quickly.

"He played in the second row against Orrell and at Otley in the back row so the flexibility in the squad is good.

"It's always good to have players who can play in a number of positions and we have that in the backs with Ben Hinshelwood.

"Ben is learning to play inside centre at the moment but can also play at 13 or 15.

"We're pleased with Mark's contribution so far but the good thing is that he wants to keep on improving."

Keast welcomed back injury victim James Brown for today's clash with Exeter at Sixways.

Brown has been suffering with a bad back but takes his place in today's 22.

The former Harlequins coach has been delighted with competition for the number 10 spot.

"We're happy with Craig Chalmers and James Brown," said Keast.

"However, we are very pleased with Jon Higgins who has been working very hard and is pushing the two older guys.

"It's great when you have them pushing one another. It's a good situation for me as a coach!"
