JOHN Brain has revealed that some of last season's flops did not care enough about playing for Worcester Rugby Club.

Sixways' director of rugby is delighted with the attitude at Worcester this season and, despite fierce competition for places, Brain believes the team ethic is much improved on last year.

"I remember when I first came to Worcester," said Brain.

"I sat players down to tell them they hadn't made the team and they shrugged their shoulders and thought 'I've got a free weekend to myself - I'll go and do some shopping!'

"Now, Andy Keast and I are responsible for the players that are at Worcester and there is a big change in attitude.

"When we tell players they haven't made the team - they are disappointed. That is the reaction that we want. I would be very worried if someone didn't care that they weren't in the side.

"We feel we have the right people here now. We have made changes not just because of players' skills but also attitude, for us, is very important. We were determined to bring the right sort of person to Worcester and we are happy with the players we have."

Despite players' disappointment at not being involved, however, coach Keast is certain that the players are willing the match-day squad on when battle commences.

"I think the players know that it is not all about a 15 or a 22. It's a team ethic here and everyone has a part to play even if you are not in the match day squad. You still come to the ground, encourage the players and help them.

" This league campaign will be won by the strongest squad not the best team.

"And it's important to have the mental strength to go with the skill and preparation on the field.

"We have made a good start but we know there are challenges ahead and we must be strong physically and mentally to come through them."
