TWO young women were subjected to an unprovoked assault from a drunken man in the town centre on Friday night.
The incident occurred in St Andrew's Street at about 10pm and police believe a motorist and an elderly couple witnessed the attack.
A spokesman said: "A man in a blue car which was parked by the Halifax got out of his car to help the women and an elderly couple by the shops are believed to have witnessed what happened."
