IT was with great sadness and regret that I read that Hewell Road Sports and Social Club had its application for renewal of its licence turned down (Advertiser, May 14).

It is a much-valued social club.

I have been a member since it first opened and I feel the club has been treated unfairly.

In all my years as a member, along with my late husband and friends, we never witnessed more than two scuffles.

I have nothing but praise and admiration for the staff and committee, who have always been helpful and welcoming.

The club has helped and supported many, many charities, not to mention individuals like myself in times of sorrow, need and support.

When my husband passed away, everyone at the club offered kindness and practical help.

The club has also been a popular meeting point for many of the town's pensioners. It was well liked by both young and elderly.

Did those concerned in making this decision really consider the loss to so many people?

I wish the club, staff and friends all the best for the future. Many thanks from myself, family and friends.
