MITCH Counsell could prove to be a real gem, according to Worcester City's assistant manager Mick Tuohy.

The 20-year-old arrived from Hellenic side Bishop's Cleeve at the end of January but has started eight of City's last nine games.

Tuohy has been impressed with the midfielder's attitude and while conceding there were still areas in his game that needed improving was pleased with his progress at Dr Martens Premier Division level.

"He is a very quiet lad who realises he has made a big jump in standard but he has shown signs of tremendous passing ability, good tackling and has got a good physique," said Tuohy.

"He's just 20 and needs to adjust to picking up the pace at this level and learn how to slow it down when he needs to but I think he could be a major coup and a quality investment.

"With good players behind him I'm looking forward to positive things from him next season.

"He and David Foy complimented each other well at Havant and if both are available along with John Snape and Pat Lyons it gives us all sorts of considerations.

"That in itself is quite an exciting group of players."

Counsell has also displayed strength of character, playing through a nasty chest infection that has restricted his breathing and led to his early withdrawal against Halesowen Town on Monday night.

He announced his arrival at Moor Green as substitute with a characteristically fierce challenge and made his home debut against Conference visitors Margate in the FA Trophy.

Counsell, a product of the Cirencester Youth Academy, has also revealed an eye for goal, grabbing the winner in City's 3-2 comeback victory at Grantham Town.

His stated aim is to earn a contract at St George's Lane and with seven games of the season remaining appears on course to be earning a shot at an extended stay at City.

Meanwhile, Fraser McHugh who starred for Halesowen Town against City on Monday night has been snapped up by Bradford City in the Nationwide First Division.
