THE residents living on the boundary of the diabolical Sainsbury's plan need no reminders what an environmental disaster it would be for our pleasant area, home for many of us for 40 years.

The destruction of the oldest tennis club in the city, plus the uprooting of probably the three most historic trees locally, are just the start of Sainsbury's plan to "make our lives taste better!"

We have to contend with the noise, pollution, rubbish, traffic and floodlights that there store would bring. No wonder I've protested so forcefully, but to no avail.

They've blighted, badgered and bewildered local residents, and lately the city council has bullied us with plans and questionnaires suggesting possible compulsory purchase and the threat of huge fines if we didn't conform to their wretched paperwork.

For the ordinary St John's resident, living away from the proposed mayhem, your problem will be the traffic and lack of store parking.

You are expected to walk to the supermarket if you live less than 600 yards away, and many are expected to use public transport.

Both Tesco and Sainsbury's will change our old centre forever.

I blame our council for refusing the Asda and Safeway proposals, which would have brought healthy competition to the closed shop we're destined to endure.

The city and county councils should put their heads together, instead of being at loggerheads.

If both refused their land, the outcome would be a supermarket being built in its correct location - the Western Bypass.
