ONE of City's most colourful supporters is Stetson clad vicar Dennis Griffin who can be seen (and heard) hollering support for his beloved team both home and away.

I had the pleasure to meet Rev Griffin at last night's FA Cup replay and he truly is a one club man.

He earned my admiration when I learned that during a 20 year spell in Manchester the Rev Griffin never once bothered going to see the Red Devils play even though their Old Trafford ground was actually in his parish.

One of the reasons was that one of their stars wanted £5 for an autograph - no names revealed but he was a Scot who liked a flutter.

"I never went once, the only club I'm interested in is Worcester City," he said.

"The Premiership, Europe and other football just doesn't interest me - only City."

The football mad man of the cloth, who created a new church in Canada called the Christian Episcopal Church of Canada (True Anglican), plans his trips to Canada around Worcester's season.

After watching them for more than 50 years he's as enthusiastic as ever and well-placed to pass judgement on the current set up and he likes what he sees.

"I really think they are going to go up this year, I've every confidence in John Barton I think he has done a fantastic job and the board is doing a good job as well.

"The trouble is we don't get real support from the council, that's been the bug bear for Worcester and always has been but then again many clubs across the country don't in similar situations."

Rev Griffin's favourite memory is the Liverpool FA Cup victory in 1959 led by the late Roy Paul.

In those days gates averaged 4-5,000 but the 77-year-old fears those days might never come back unless City continue winning.

"With crowds like that it was always a great atmosphere with good banter but the trouble with Worcester people especially today is that they have got to have a winning team.

"The team has to be at the top of the table. This is why people support Man Utd because they are taking glory from the club by being associated with it."

For Rev Griffin however his heroes are not David Beckham and Ryan Giggs but the stars of St George's Lane including his favourite Mark Owen who before last night's match he confidently predicted would soon be back among the goals - how right he was.

Asa Charlton again missed out on last night's clash but is targeting a Saturday return but that is too soon for Mark Shail and David Foy.
