WORCESTER City will be faced with a £250,000 repair bill to upgrade St George's Lane if they don't secure a ground move inside five years.

This summer the club has splashed out £25,000 on rebuilding the Brookside perimeter fence to crush barrier standards to gain a safety certificate.

But inside five years extensive work will be required on the Brookside and Canal End terracing which will cost an estimated £250,000.

Spiralling costs of ground safety repairs means City have now spent more than £150,000 on the ground Lane in the last five years alone.

Club director Alan Wills, in charge of ground upgrades, insists a move is urgent.

"This brings the total amount spent on St George's Lane in the last five years to well over £150,000 and emphasises the urgent need to move to a new ground," he said.

"If we stay at St George's Lane the whole of the Brookside and Canal End terracing and crash barriers will have to be replaced in the next few years."

The latest work, which has been largely covered by a £22,000 Football Stadia Improvement Fund grant, also entails replacing the emergency exit at the Canal End of the ground near to the Cavalier Tavern.

There will also be a major overhaul of the PA System with new loudspeakers and amplifiers. The floodlights, too, will be realigned in the next month to comply with legislation for the FA Cup.

Wills said the costs of ground repairs and team improvements remained a delicate balancing act.

"We would not have been able to do the ground improvements without the help of our supporters," he said.
