LEON Jackson is back refreshed and raring to go after an injury plagued start to his first season at St George's Lane.

The former Bilston Town midfielder was troubled with ankle and knee problems that hampered his form and fitness soon after scoring his first City goal against Newport Isle of Wight.

But after a summer break the 23-year-old has returned and already impressed assistant boss Mick Tuohy with his fitness.

"I think Leon will make an impact this year, his fitness levels are incredible," said Tuohy.

"We've signed three midfielders but Leon has come out with exactly the response I would expect.

"He's grabbed the bull by the horns and laid down the challenge to them."

Jackson got into shape with weights and endurance training and was able to take pre-season training in his stride.

Feeling

"I had a feeling it was going to be hard but actually it wasn't too bad and I haven't felt anything injury-wise," he said.

"Last season I went to Hereford which was harder because we trained every day."

Medial damage picked up in the Newport match in December restricted Jackson's appearances last season, and the 23-year-old is aiming for a fresh start.

"It was disappointing last year because I started quite well but got injured scoring the goal and struggled for the rest of the season," he said.

"I was pretty gutted but I've done everything to get rid of the injury and I feel fine.

"I'm looking forward to the new season and I think John Barton has built up a good squad.

"There is a lot of competition for places in midfield but I'm happy to play anywhere."

Meanwhile the club is holding its annual open day at St George's Lane on Saturday, August 3, between 11am-4pm.

Star attraction will be Rob Walters, cousin of ex-Aston Villa and England star Mark Walters, who is best known for being Ronaldo's body double in the Nike advert on the boat with Eric Cantona.

He has also appeared in Coca-Cola adverts but his real claim to fame is that he is the world keepy-uppy champion having kept a ball up for over 17 hours!
