Worcester's brittle batting raised its ugly head again on Saturday when they entertained Wroxeter in Division One of the Birmingham & District League.

The home side hung on for a draw in the end but these collapses must be causing some concern.

Guy Muspratt won the toss for his side and asked the visitors to bat on a damp pitch following the recent poor weather. They got off to a good start with Nigel Stovold and Brian Jones putting on 39 for the first wicket, before Daryl Mitchell bowled both batsmen in the space of eight balls.

However, Wroxeter were boosted by Andy Johnson who made a magnificent 112 and Guy Home who hit a dogged 43, both batsmen surviving spilt catches, but their partnership realised 147 priceless runs as Worcester toiled in the field.

Johnson hit 14 fours and four sixes in his two-and-a-half hour innings as his side made 240-6 from their 55 overs.

Best bowlers for Worcester were Muspratt with 2-59 and Mitchell with 2-39.

In reply Worcester got into immediate trouble stumbling to 10-3 in the ninth over and they never got back in to the game after that.

However, Mitchell stood firm and made a heroic 57 in two-and-a-quarter hours at the crease but eventually misjudged the line of a delivery from Alan Dunkerley to which he did not play a shot and embarrassingly lost his offstump.

Apart from 27 from Paul Jones, the rest of the batting crumbled and Worcester were grateful to hang on for a draw at 145-9. Worcester took five points to Wroxeter's 14.

Worcester's seconds travelled to Wroxeter for the return fixture and suffered yet again at the hands of the weather with the game being abandoned after 25 overs.

The home side had reached 65-3, with Andrew Van-Vuuren grabbing 2-9. Worcester took five points to Wroxeter's four.
