MALVERN RFC's season finishes this Sunday with a sponsor's day match against a University College, Worcester side.

Director of rugby David Robins, whose company DIR International is hosting the event, said: "We have forged strong links over the last couple of years with the University's rugby department, strengthened by having the same coach, Andy Cushing. The link has already proved to be successful, with several students having carved out regular playing slots at Malvern.

"Sam Hardcastle has made himself a particular favourite with the Spring Lane faithful, whilst centre Mark Eastwood's skills and flanker Nick Smith's non-stop tackling and support play have also enhanced Malvern's play."

With Tom Annandale, Ben Cheeseman, Duncan Billane, Chris Pemble and Andy Isaac also having made appearances at first XV level, the mixture of youth and experience started to gel really well towards the end of the season.

Even if Malvern suffer relegation due to the peculiarities of RFU administration, Robins is convinced that the link-up can only serve Malvern well.

Robins continued: "As a small town club with no real hinterland, we can't hope to supply a full first team of local players for the level we play at. Like most clubs, we lose many of our promising youngsters to universities away from the area, so it is fortunate we can replace them with students who have come to Worcestershire to study. An added bonus is that some will find work in the area and settle here after graduating, becoming long-term club members. Our local players have accepted the students warmly and they in turn have integrated into the club, not just at first XV level."

Sunday's match is also a chance for Malvern RFC to thank all the sponsors who have supported them through the season.

"As a totally amateur club, we desperately need the backing that our sponsors give us. Just running the playing side runs into many thousands, with kit, travel, physio costs and ground maintenance. We are grateful to all those sponsors, corporate and individual, who give their backing to Malvern RFC throughout the year," said Robins.
