A RE-CREATION of a Victorian sports day will be held at West Malvern.

The event, on Sunday, June 22, is as part of a weekend of festivities marking the 50th anniversary of the Queen's coronation.

Although celebrations took place last year for the golden jubilee of the Queen's accession to the throne in 1952, she was not actually crowned until 1953.

The original sports day at West Malvern was held in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee.

Among the events being re-enacted is a race to the top of the Worcestershire Beacon. There will also be a variety of other track and field events, some serious and some less so, for all ages.

The event will also incorporate the sports day for the village school, St James's Primary.

The weekend kicks off at 2pm on Saturday, June 21, when Lady Morrison of Madresfield Court opens the village fete on the playing fields.

Later that day, there will be a concert entitled Hearts and Flowers, with music and recitations, mainly from Victorian times, in the village church.

There will also be a flower festival in the village church, and an exhibition of West Malvern memorabilia in the village hall on the Saturday and Sunday. And in the week leading up to the festival, teams from the village will be taking part in a quiz.

To round off the weekend, there will be a barn dance in the marquee on the playing fields after the Sunday sports day.

John Raine, parish councillor and chairman of the festival committee, said: "We'd welcome hearing from anyone who wants a stall to sell their crafts or whatever at the fete on the Saturday."
