TWO prison officers from Long Lartin are attempting a world-record car push at the end of next month.

The current record of 33.7 miles is held by two Texans but Brian Davies, aged 40, and Jez Mole, aged 38, reckon they can better that in a 24-hour period during the last week in May.

Mr Davies said: "Nearer the time we shall pick a day when, hopefully, the weather will be good. We shall go for 24 hours and hope to beat the current record by a considerable margin."

Money they raise from sponsors will go to Wish Upon a Star, a charity which takes terminally ill children on holiday.

They hope to be able to do the push at the Unipart Depot near the prison but, if that is not possible, the route will be round the houses on the housing estate alongside the prison.

"We have been practising with a number of three-mile stints and building up our strength and stamina by sessions in the gym," Mr Davies said.

No stranger to fund-raising activities, Mr Davies has completed the Three Peaks Challenge and also carried a man on his back from Long Lartin to Evesham.

"I like a challenge and, if I think it can be achieved, I will have a go at it," he said.
