MOTORSPORT: Speed king Terry Challinor claimed Red Marley's Silver Helmet for the second successive year.

The Shrewsbury ace twice broke his record for the quarter-mile hill climb with a fastest time of 21.6 seconds at the Great Witley event on Bank Holiday Monday.

Other winners included Vince Priestley, who beat off competition from his brothers Joe and William to claim top spot in the Class Vintage pre-1940s bikes.

In the Class II 350cc category, Mick Beech, on a BSA B40, beat Stourport's Paul Bennett into first place with Dave Faulkner in third position.

Tim Manton was the quickest in the Class III 350cc plus category, beating Challinor and Arthur Browning.

Manton also came top in the all-comers section, pipping Dave Bell in second, while Lee Owen and Roy Sherbourne were third and fourth.

Around 5,000 spectators turned up with meeting secretary Joe Owen, from organisers AJS & Matchless Owners Club, declaring it a success.

J Owen said: "It's going from strength to strength. We thought we were going to suffer with the weather but it turned out fine in the end and I think everybody went away happy."

Red Marley roared back onto the calendar in 2000 after nearly 30 years without being staged and is now firmly back on the racing map.
