A LAST-ditch attempt to secure an arts complex for Wyre Forest residents could see Kidderminster Town Hall become the theatrical centre of the district.

Wyre Forest District Council has called in a team of architects to look at how the listed building could be transformed into a venue specialising in the performing arts.

It is likely to be the council's last hope of establishing an arts centre in Wyre Forest - previous attempts to set up a facility in Kidderminster town centre, Bewdley High School and Stourport High School have all fallen though. Mayor of Kidderminster Ken Stokes outside the town hall - which could be transformed into an arts complex.

Head of culture at Wyre Forest District Council Andrew Dickens said: "Over a period of five years we have been looking at various buildings to try and establish an arts complex of some type.

"None of these have been suitable.

"The town hall has a stage, balcony and music room but lacks many important features including backstage rooms and storage space. The study will let us know what can and cannot be done."

Mr Dickens said the council had put forward the town hall, which houses the Corn Exchange, as it was "really the only suitable building we own".

He said: "The council has always been conscious of the needs for an arts centre in Wyre Forest."

Portfolio holder for community life Ken Stokes told a full council meeting last Wednesday that "first indications from the feasibility study carried out on the town hall are exciting."

Speaking after the meeting Mr Stokes, also town mayor, said: "The town hall gets a subsidy of £250, 000 from the council each year which would help towards costs. It needs to be done."

A series of proposals will be brought before the meeting of the council executive next month.
