A PARTY of members of Bromsgrove Round Table, plus representatives from the Worcester branch, spent a day down a coal mine when they were guests of Mid Cannock Colliery.

IT had been a good year for potato crops in the Bromsgrove district.

A Rowney Green woman had lifted 74lb from just 1lb of seed, while another from Cutnall Green had harvested 10lb from a single set. But Mr L Halfpenny, from Old Station Road, Bromsgrove, beat the lot.

A single plant of the variety Arran Banner had grown to an amazing six feet tall, had flowered five times and had produced 50 tubers weighing 19.5lbs.

A QUICK look at some of the prices realised at Bromsgrove's Tuesday produce market revealed duck eggs were knocked down for 9/- (45p) per dozen, celery 5/6 (27.5p) for 12 sticks and chrysanths 4/- (20p) a bunch.

PENSIONERS who had worked for the ICI salt works at Stoke could look forward to increased pensions after the firm announced a 20 per cent increase.

This would mean pensions would rise from 10/- (50p) to 15/- (75p) per week.

THE Tory Government's transport bill, which proposed to return Britain's road haulage industry into private ownership and modify the rail system, was hotly debated at a meeting chaired by Labour councillor Henry Webley at Bromsgrove's Parish Hall. Labour was to launch a national campaign against the proposals.
