AS usual, Mr Spiteri has completely misunderstood the whole point of the discussion about the EU (You Say, February 13).

He waffles on and on about the UK's historical, albeit tenuous, connections with continental Europe.

We all know that in the past British Monarchy has inter-bred with European monarchies, we all know that the English language derives certain words from other European languages (although they mostly share a common origin of Latin), we all know that "we have many twinned towns and student exchanges", and we all know that European Nazi, Fascist and Communist regimes have obliged millions of people to flee across thousands of miles of Europe during the 20th century in order to escape persecution and probable extermination.

My own grandfather had to flee Belgium to escape German tyranny in 1914.

Most of these "links" with Europe are historic and were not exactly salutary to the UK, in other words our so-called "links" with Europe are either irrelevant or were forced upon us as a result of European aggression.

The issue at stake today, which Mr Spiteri chooses to ignore, is the future of the UK and its position within the world.

The simple fact is that France and Germany have a joint agenda to dominate the EU and to create a federal Nation State therein.

Mr Spiteri might not care about this, his allegiance might not in fact be to the UK, but the simple fact is that most people in the UK wish for their country to remain independent, and this can only be achieved by avoiding further political union with the EU.
