SIR Michael Spicer (below) is reported to have complained that a regional government in Birmingham will mean higher taxes and be "yet another wasteful tier of Government".
In fact, if there was a regional government, the existing county council would be scrapped, so the number of tiers of administration would remain the same in this area.
The existing system of local government in the UK has not served Worcestershire people well, so we may as well try regionalism.
Ideally, 12 adjoining areas should be merged into the city of Worcester, which would then become a unitary authority.
The existing Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council should be prepared to do their democratic duty and allow a referendum concerning the desire of citizens for regional government.
D E MARGRETT, Worcester.
