A TEENAGER locked up for violence at a pub saved the life of a fellow inmate who was trying to commit suicide, a court heard.

Ryan Calder was made a landing orderly at the young offenders' institution and had to turn the lights off at night.

But during his rounds he went to say goodnight to another prisoner and found him trying to take his own life, Nigel Stelling, defending, told Worcester Crown Court.

"His quick thinking saved that young man's life," he added.

Calder, aged 19, of Gaymore Road, Cookley, near Kidderminster, admitted affray.

Judge John Cavell heard that he had served the equivalent of three months' custody while on remand.

He freed Calder and ordered him to perform 60 hours of unpaid community work.

The judge made no reference to the suicide bid but said he hoped the defendant - who had no record for violence - had learnt his lesson.

Calder was with a group of friends watching England's televised World Cup clash with Sweden on Saturday, June 2 last year in Yates Wine Bar in Oxford Street, Kidderminster.

James McCracken, prosecuting, said abuse was hurled towards a crowd of schoolgirls in the pub before customer Ben Carpenter was punched in the toilets by Calder.

Ejected on to the street, more violence broke out and another pubgoer, Colin Baars, was also hurt.

Mr Stelling said Calder had vowed to keep out of custody in the future.

Judge Cavell ordered Calder to pay the victims £200 each in compensation.
