A COUPLE have told how they were awoken by a car slamming into their home in the middle of the night.

The incident happened at approximately 4.20am yesterday when a man driving a 4x4 vehicle, which was travelling west along Bransford Road, smashed into the couple's silver Mondeo and then carried on into the garage.

Alan Durham, aged 55, a manager of a training consultancy firm, from Bransford Road, said he and his wife Tana were awoken when they heard a tremendous bang.

When they went to investigate they could not get out of their house because the door had been jammed into the wall.

"We had to be interviewed by the police through the letter box," said Mrs Durham, who is also a consultant.

He praised the emergency services who arrived at their house, on the corner of Watery Lane, within five minutes.

"The firefighters were incredible," said Mr Durham. "We were really impressed with them."

The driver had to be cut out of his car by firefighters and was taken by ambulance to Worcestershire Royal hospital where he is being treated for minor injuries.

Mrs Durham also said the police had told them that if the driver had not hit their car he would have gone into the living room and probably not survived.

The couple, who had only just finished redecorating their living room, said the impact of the car into the house was so great that there were large cracks in the living room wall and parts of the ceiling had fallen down.

The outside wall next to the front door also had a large crack in it and their car, which they bought last September, was completely written off. The garage wall was also badly damaged.
