A MOTHER whose daughter was killed in a freak accident when the car she was in was hit by a trailer has slammed the judicial system.

Sheila Hawkins, speaking in the week a coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death on her daughter Mandi, has told of the inconsistency she believes there is in British justice.

After the death of mother-of-four Mandi Hawkins, two men were convicted of using a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

The owner was fined and the driver was fined and disqualified from driving for four months.

Now, a year to the day of Mandi's funeral, her 61-year-old grieving mother, of Hampton, near Evesham, has spoken of her feelings.

"It's dreadful when you see that a man who knocked the head off a statue of Margaret Thatcher was jailed for three months," she said.

"My daughter has gone forever and they escaped a jail sentence. I know the accident was unintentional but it just doesn't seem consistent."

The 35-year-old mobile hairdresser had been due to celebrate her two-year engagement to fiance Paul Houlton the next day, St Valentine's Day.

But, on the A44 travelling towards Evesham, she died after the Land Rover Discovery she was in was struck by a van's trailer.

Today, Mrs Hawkins has spoken about the day which devastated her life, and how Mandi's children - Luci, 14, Jaymi, 12, George, seven, and Thomas, two - are coping with her loss.

"They've got a lot of living to do without their mum," said Sheila.

"But they know the rest of their family is there for them at all times.. I still cry every day, because I miss Mandi so dreadfully. My heart died with her."
