WYCHAVON is a godly district with its headcount of Christians topping the national average by nearly 10 per cent.

Some 80.5 per cent of the area's population declared themselves Christian compared to 71.6 per cent across the rest of the UK.

Muslims make up just 0.2 per cent of Wychavon residents and Hindus, 0.05 per cent.

This was just one of the revelations from the 2001 Census released by Worcestershire County Council's research and intelligence unit.

Figures for Droitwich Spa alone are not yet available but the statistics have been broken down into districts. The Census shows Wychavon's population has risen from 101,900 to 112,987 in the past decade, with 2,000 more women than men in the area.A majority of residents are in their autumn years. Over 25,000 (22 per cent) are aged between 45 and 59.

Married couples make up nearly half of the population, 8,715 have re-married, 6,000 are widowed and more than 4,000 are divorced. There are 1,940 lone parents, 210 of which are male.

White Brits make up 109,000 (96 per cent) of the overall population and just 30 mixed white/African are shown in the results.

Wychavon has its fair share of hard workers and car lovers. The figures show 30,000 men and 25,000 women are employed full-time and 37,000 use their cars to get to work. A county council spokeswoman said: "The statistics provide a useful insight into how Worcestershire has evolved since the last Census in 1991. People have become increasingly reliant on the car."

People in Wychavon declared themselves to be in fine shape, with 79,000 (69.9 per cent compared with 68.6 per cent nation-wide) declaring their health to be "good". Only 8,000 (7 per cent) said their health was "not good."
