OPENING bat Tom Wolfendale has taken over the captain's role at Colwall Cricket Club.

At Monday's annual general meeting Wolfendale was elected to take over from David Sutton, who steps down after a five year stint.

Also newly appointed is Adrian Berry as club president. In his acceptance speech the new president reflected that in his 50 years with the club he had only known two other presidents and thanked the retiring president, Don Bannister for his 40 years of service in many different roles.

The second XI will be in the hands of David Child, supported by Gareth Bakewell, whilst Rick Lewis will lead the thirds as they try to hold onto the Worcester-shire League crown they won last season.

Cricket at Colwall begins in earnest on April 13 when Worcestershire meet Hereford-shire in a benefit match for David Leatherdale.

This the first in a number of representative games which take advantage of Colwall's magnificent facility, tribute for which goes to groundsman, Derek Brimmell, who was elected as a life member at the AGM.

Following last year's successful season, junior cricket continues to grow. Gary King leads a team of experienced coaches and this year will see the introduction of an U17 team to compliment club teams from U10 upwards and the highly successful girls' team.

The teams commence training on Sunday, March 2 at John Mase-field School in Ledbury. Sessions are from 10am-noon and the new captains would be pleased to hear from any players who would like to join this thriving club.
