TRANSPORT was the main bone of contention for more than one young person who took part in the Youthink survey.

Eighteen-year-old Kirsty Fraser, from Knightwick, said transport was a crucial issue for young people in rural areas, who often miss out on social activities that take place in towns.

"There are only two buses a day out of Knightwick," she said.

"One leaves in the morning and the other comes back at six o' clock in the evening, so it's impossible to go out at night."

The former Chase pupil said that, although events were organised for young people it was necessary to provide transport to them and organisers often forgot this.

She said Worcestershire youth service's rural team were good because they provided transport to events.

"Before they came there was nothing for young people in the village," she said.

Kirsty, one of 100 young people whose video interviews were used to promote discussion at meetings in Malvern, Knight-wick, Ryall and Tenbury Wells, said that establishing independence was difficult for young people in rural areas.

"If you want to move out of home there's nowhere to go. For example housing forms were recently sent out to families in the area but 17- and 18-year-olds didn't get forms," she said.

Kirsty said the Youthink scheme was a good idea but she was not convinced adults would take the opinions seriously.

"A lot of it is tokenism," she said. "We might be concerned with a big issue and they give us a smaller issue on which to make decisions."
