A PRESENTATION of young people's opinions was made to members of Malvern Hills District Council, the police and youth service last week.

Statistics garnered as part of a Youthink survey showed youngsters' views as to how their lives could be improved.

The project was set in motion by MHDC assistant chief executive Stephen Leese, after young people failed to come forward during last year's Vision 21 consultative process.

An innovative approach using high-tech equipment succeeded in video interviewing an initial 100 people before 133 others met for discussions and electronic voting.

Favourite topics were, with 99 per cent of votes, that the Three Counties Showground should be used for youth festivals and that skateboarding facilities in Malvern be improved (60 per cent).

Ninety-five per cent said they would make use of public transport if it was better. There was a distrust of politicians, with 66 per cent believing politicians did not listen to young people's views, while 53 per cent lacked confidence in the police.

Leading the presentation was Richard Wood of Youthcomm, who said: "The Three Counties Showground was one of the most important issues to come from youngsters all over the district. They want it used more for youth events such as gigs or music festivals, either once a month or quarterly."

Mr Leese said the council would see what it could do to incorporate more youth-oriented activities at the showground.

He promised issues raised would be taken on board and said that where projects could not be carried out, the agencies involved should go back and explain why.
