Out-of-date information typically leads to misunderstandings and consequently poor decision-making.

For a considerable time, we in Upton have faced successive versions of a very large and expensive ten-year long plan to develop a holiday village as part of the proposed extension of the Upton-upon-Severn Marina site.

Are we in danger of poor decision-making, or is all well? I would like to know.

The Upton Marina development was considered by MHDC's southern area planning committee on December 18 and the application referred for further consultation. I understand it is possible the application will be resubmitted for consideration at the planning meeting scheduled for March 19.

Walton Marine has a vision of the future for its Upton site and surrounds. A beautifully-made model of an earlier manifestation of that vision, accompanied by drawings and plans, was exhibited at the Memorial Hall as part of the Civic Society's Golden Jubilee exhibition.

That particular version of the Walton Marine vision was unquestionably controversial. It was viewed as a nightmare by some visitors; as a marvellous opportunity for the area by others. Compromises by those at these two extremes are essential if a democratic consensus is to be achieved.

As citizens, we need to know what is being proposed before major and irrevocable decisions that will affect the short, medium and long-term future of the area, are made on our behalf.

The Upton-upon-Severn Civic Society has organised a public meeting to hear about, and comment on, the most recent developments in the planning application being made by Walton Marine to extend the facilities of the Upton-upon-Severn Marina.

The meeting will be held on Friday, February 28, starting at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall, Old Street, Upton-upon-Severn. Representatives of Walton Marine and other interested parties have agreed to attend, provide information, listen to concerns and, where possible, respond.

We anticipate an informative and constructive evening. If the future of Upton concerns you, your children or grandchildren, please join us for this event.
