A ZEBRA crossing is to be designed to help people cross Malvern's Newtown Road after a pelican crossing was ruled out.
Worcestershire County Council wanted to put in a traffic light-controlled crossing as part of a Safer Routes to School scheme.
The initiative has already seen traffic calming measures installed on and around Somers Park Avenue.
However, the council says traffic regulations would not allow such a crossing to be built at the spot where surveys have revealed most pedestrians cross the road. It said the only type that could be installed there wass a zebra crossing.
Ashley Roberts, of the council's sustainable transportation environmental services, said that building a zebra crossing was the preferred option.
Consultants Halcrow will now come up with a detailed design to allow the council to make a decision about whether or not to go ahead.
