I WAS delighted to hear that the HIC campaigners have had a fifth successful pub evening (Ledbury Reporter, February 7).

What a shame that the same level of enthusiasm was not given to supporting The Horseshoe Inn while it was open. If it had been the pub would never have closed.

I am mystified by the way in which the campaigners feel they are keeping the community of Broom's Green alive. What happens in between the pub evenings? Does life come to a halt? Is there bitter feuding and recrimination? No, it's an active and friendly community.

The village of Broom's Green consists of 17 houses and has a solid community life and a very well used village hall, which has always been a focal point for any village events. People even venture out to the far-flung delights of Ledbury.

My family and I have been made to feel very welcome and have made many new friends.

A community does not depend solely on one building in order for it to function. It is about the people who live there.

On a final note, the licence for The Horseshoe was revoked in December 2002. It is no longer a pub!

An alternative commercial use has been put forward rather than attempts to turn it into a residential property. This has not been the case for many other rural pubs, which have closed.
