NORTHLEIGH School was home to displays of African and Indian culture as part of its performing arts week.

Key Stage 1 and years five and six were given a taste of African drumming last Monday and Wednesday while on Tuesday the year five and six pupils were involved in street dance.

The events linked in with their work on Britain Since The 1930s.

Years three and four took their turn on Thursday when they learned traditional Bhangra dance moves from the Nachda Sansaar dancers. They also had their hands painted in the traditional Mehndi style.

The week concluded with workshops directed by the Young Shakespeare Company, who performed scenes from Hamlet for all Key Stage Two pupils.

Deputy head Wendy Howell said the pupils had thoroughly enjoyed the week and said the school would be glad to do it again in the future.

"I think the words 'wicked' and 'cool' were used!" she said. "We do find these focus weeks are very rewarding."
