A WHEELCHAIR basketball club for Worcestershire and Herefordshire is set to be launched tomorrow (Saturday) at University College Worc-ester from 10am to noon.

The club will meet regularly at University College Worcester which is supporting the club from day one.

Wheelchair basketball can be played by anyone, male or female with a lower limb disability that prevents them from playing the running game.

Driving the launch of the new club is its chairman Craig Hayes, himself a wheelchair user, following an off-duty motorcycle accident in 1999 whilst he was in the army.

A naturally active person, he's keen to get involved himself and is optimistic that there are others in Worcestershire and Herefordshire who will share his enthusiasm.

He said: "We're really excited about the prospects of getting it up and running and giving wheelchair users the opportunity to try the game for themselves. We've applied for a Sport for All grant towards wheelchairs, coaching, administration and insurance costs and we're optimistic we'll be successful with that. I'd like to invite anyone who thinks it would be fun to try the game to head on down to UCW on Saturday to see it for themselves."

Gordon Perry from the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association will be bringing the association's road show with him on the day.
