MEP Phillip Bushill-Mathews has suggested (You Say, Tuesday, February 11) that I advocated withdrawing from the EU because "France's best friend is Germany".

This is a gross over-simplification of the issue and certainly a misrepresentation of what I actually wrote.

It is clear that the future of the EU is as a federal Nation State (refer to the European State Constitution issued on February 6, 2003) and this will be utterly dominated by a Franco-German alliance.

The efforts by France and Germany to wreck Nato and push ahead with their union is clear evidence of their ambitions for the EU.

France's aim for many years has been the creation of the European Nation State, and they have seized upon the Iraqi crisis as an opportunity to forward their ambitions, along with their greatest ally, Germany.

It would appear that France and Germany care more for their personal ambitions than they do for the security of the world as a whole.

This alone might be regarded as good reason for the UK to refrain from further unification with these so-called "friends".

What I actually indicated on January 30 was my opinion that the UK has a clear and unequivocal position within world politics, and it would benefit us not to surrender this position to a Franco-German dominated Nation State called the EU.
