A PENSIONER from Pershore has been forced to pay double the price for work done on his drive by cold callers.

The householder, whose identity is being protested by the Journal, said he wished to warn other elderly people against accepting quotes for any work offered from doorstep callers. The pensioner said: "Men who turned up on my drive quoted £5 a metre for resurfacing it.

"Then when they had finished they demanded ten times that amount.

In the end my wife and I finished up paying them twice as much as we expected, and whole experience was very intimidating."

Acting sergeant Tom Iddon said: "I am currently touring all the vulnerable groups in the area to warn them about these callers.

Despite a feature in the Journal a few weeks ago warning against this sort of practise, people are still allowing themselves to be conned - it is very disappointing. " The answer is - if you want a job done get proper estimates from reputable companies.

"A quote on the doorstep might sound cheap, but in the long run it can be very expensive."
