AN exciting scheme to create a one-way "loop road" in the heart of Kidderminster could become a reality.

The proposal for the Coventry Street and Blackwell Street circuit would offer extra on-street parking and better bus facilities, helping to bring more shoppers into the area.

The idea from the county's highways partnership team was outlined to Wyre Forest councillors last week.

Detailed plans will now be done before consultation with shopkeepers, bus company First and nearby residents.

The initial proposal's key features include:

A one-way system from the junction of Coventry Street/Bromsgrove Street to the Blackwell Street ring-road island.

'Front bumper to kerb' parking along Blackwell Street.

Pedestrianising the pull-in bus area and short cul-de-sac section of Coventry Street.

Putting in extra bus stops.

iClosing off one of two exits from the Swan Centre car park to create disabled parking area.

Introducing traffic-calming measures on Blackwell Street.

Councillor Howard Martin said he was "very excited" about the prospect of a reinvigorated Blackwell Street area.

"Kidderminster is soon going to be a wonderful place to be, with a vibrant and bigger town centre, and we do not intend to let the 'old' part of town suffer.

"Measures like this, which will encourage better transport and parking in the Blackwell Street area, should help."

Stuart Reynolds, manager of Wyre Forest's Highways Partnership, said the proposal was at an early stage but could be implemented next year.

Swan Centre manager Margaret Moon, who said the idea was raised several years ago, added: "It is a wonderful idea and the sooner it happens the better."
