A LEADING student from the county has completed a top RAF training course that prepares graduates for professional service.

Flying Officer James Owens, aged 22, from Lower Broadheath, Worcester, graduated from No. 199 Initial Officer Training Course at RAF College Cranwell, near Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

FO Owens, who won flying and sixth-form scholarships from Chantry High School, Martley, and Worcester Sixth Form College, was a member of 187 (City of Worcester) Squadron, Air Training Corps.

After studying International Politics and Strategic Studies at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, he joined the RAF last August.

The 24-week course provides general service and character development and, after professional training, enables graduates to take up junior officer posts.

It includes physical and ground-defence training, leadership and management skills, adventure training in Scotland, operational studies and air experience.

FO Owens' graduation earlier this month was held at the college and was overseen by reviewing officer Air Vice-Marshal Andy Burton.
