THERE was a splashing start to the New Year in Bewdley when the traditional duck race attracted hundreds of people, despite the wet weather.

The record-breaking event, organised by Kidderminster and District Lions Club, attracted more than 300 entries and cheering crowds lined the banks of the River Severn.

It raised £500, which will help fund the club's charitable work in Wyre Forest.

Spokesman Colin Hill said: "Every year, more and more ducks are entered in the race whatever the weather.

"This year, we had a lot of spectators who lined both sides of the river despite the pouring rain."

Winner of the race from the bridge to Lax Lane was Victoria Clipson of Bewdley, with Jake Mills, also of Bewdley, in second place.

Winner of the ugly duck competition was Mike Aitken, of Kidderminster.

The Lions are now preparing for their next annual waterborne event - the raft race down the Severn from Arley to Stourport on May 11.

Entry forms are available from Ron Cross on 01299 825230.
