A PUBLIC inquiry will be carried out before a final decision on whether to grant a licence for an animal carcass incinerator in Astwood Bank is made.

The controversial plan was turned down by a specially formed enforcement committee of five Redditch councillors last month.

But bosses at Popes Lane By-Products, the firm behind the proposal, lodged an appeal with the Secretary of State.

Yesterday, Redditch environmental chiefs received a letter from the planning inspectorate stating there would be a public inquiry because of the controversy surrounding the application.

Plans for a round-the-clock incinerator were revealed in August, sparking outrage from residents concerned about its siting next to Astwood Bank First School and the health risk from emissions.

Anyone wanting to make written representation should contact The Planning Inspectorate, Room 4/19-Eagle Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol, Bs1 6PN quoting APP/EPA/02/168.
