MOTORSPORT: Kart champion Nathan Freke competed in his first car meeting at the Mallory Park Plum Pudding event and made a satisfactory debut.

With only 75 laps of testing the 1989 Jamun FF 1600 prior to the meeting and no wet testing, Freke qualified 10th for the first race and fifth in class in lashing rain and wind.

The Kidderminster driver started on grid 10 but was hampered by the car on the row in front which was dropping oil and making following cars lose their grip.

But Freke recovered to finish 10th and fourth in class before going on to end up 11th and fifth in class for the second contest.

Without his normal race mechanics, changes were made to the car which proved to be wrong in the conditions.

He was, however, happy with his debut and with two signatures towards his National A licence.

Freke will contest an FF1600 series this year unless funding can be secured for a higher profile class after being invited to test Formula Renault, Zetec FF and Renault Clio.
