GOLF: Amateur golfer Pete Williams is feeling the heat after leaving the freezing West Midlands behind and jetting off for a shot at the Wilson Matchplay Golf Championship title in sunny Portugal.
The 37-year-old Shatterford man left yesterday for the 72-hole grand final after blasting his way through as the West Midlands' only representative from a 6,000-strong national field.
Playing off a six-handicap, Williams will go head-to-head with five other finalists in his quest for the title at the spectacular Vale do Lobo course, scene of this year's Portuguese Open.
The pressure will be on along with the Sky Sports television cameras but the assistant greenkeeper, who plays for Bromsgrove Golf Club, feels he is more than up to the challenge with the help of caddie, Redditch-based Liz Newton.
Williams said: "When I first made it through to Portugal after the final eliminator at the Sandwell Park Golf Club I was elated but now I'm there it isn't enough.
"I am going out there with the belief that I can and will win and with Liz's help and advice I really believe I can bring the trophy back with me to the West Midlands."
