DISABLED people in the Third World are set to benefit from a £12,000 fund-raising push by Bewdley students.

Bewdley Interact Club, based at the town's high school, aims to raise the cash for American-based charity The Wheelchair Foundation by this summer.

And one member will be taking the plunge by making a 10,000ft freefall skydive in the second in a series of events.

Amy-Jo Bullock, of Red Hill, is taking part in a sponsored parachute jump next month at a Shropshire airfield.

The 16-year-old Bewdley High School student said she hopes to raise "lots of money" to support the foundation, which provides wheelchairs to underprivileged and disabled people in the Third World.

Her brave stunt, set to take place on Saturday, February 1, is part of the club's bid to raise £12,000 for the charity. Amy-Jo Bullock, 16, at work.

She said: "There are about 15 of us in the group aged between 14 and 18.

"If we get £12,000, the foundation will match that amount. This will make a total of £24,000, which will buy 250 wheel chairs."

Interact is the junior branch of the town's Rotary Club, which is also involved in fund-raising.

Amy-Jo said members felt touched by the charity's leaflet and pledged to raise the target by June.

The part-time waitress at the town's Ramada Hotel added: "It is quite scary, but I will definitely go through with it because I want to raise lots of money."

The first fund-raising event was a cheese and wine evening in November last year and raised £700. Details of further events have yet to be finalised.
