POLICE and pub landlords have praised New Year revellers after trouble-free celebrations in Wyre Forest.

Pub bosses and police pledged before New Year to bar any yobs for up to two years and prosecute anyone involved in violent disorder during the period.

However, it was goodwill to all as 2003 was welcomed with partying rather than punch-ups in the district.

Kidderminster Police spokeswoman Caroline Schubert said: "It was a very peaceful and troublefree New Year.

"We don't know if people took heed of our message or it was because pubs were closing at different times so there wasn't a host of people meeting at the same time.

"However, whatever the reason, it is a positive start to the New Year."

Police had warned troublemakers in addition to prosecutions they would also apply to the courts for offenders to be excluded from licensed premises.

Exclusion orders can last up to two years.

Vice-chairman of Kidderminster Licensees' Association Dave Hipkiss believed yobs heeded the message.

Mr Hipkiss, who runs the Tap House, Worcester Street, said: "It was the best New Year in ages.

"Not only did people behave themselves but they were out in great numbers. I think the police warning had the desired effect.

"Let's hope this very positive start to the year continues throughout 2003."
