BLOOD donors in Worcester turned out in force to help boost supplies across the county.
The National Blood Service was on hand to collect blood from willing volunteers at St Andrew's Methodist Church Hall in Pump Street earlier this week and the facts and figures they contribute to make for interesting reading.
West Midlands hospitals need 1,000 units of blood every day - one unit is just under a pint.
In one year alone, Worcester Royal Hospital uses 7,439 units.
In Worcester, nearly half of the blood collected is used to help treat conditions such as cancer, leukaemia and other blood disorders.
A further 5 per cent of blood products are used to deal with emergencies, such as road traffic accidents.
In total, the National Blood Service collected 31,349 donations from across the Two Counties between April 2001 and April 2002.
