KIDDERMINSTER Harriers supporters are among the best behaved fans in the country because of the way they are treated at Aggborough, says the club.

The Division Three club was pipped to top spot by Macclesfield Town in a Home Office league table for arrests after only one supporter was collared last season and safety officer Peter Picken is delighted.

"We have worked hard to establish a nice atmosphere and we treat people in a way to try and reduce any form of tension at the matches," he said.

"If you go to any game and receive the right treatment, in a friendly environment you are inclined to behave yourself, and that is what we try to promote at this club for both home and away fans."

The only arrest took place outside the ground while four away supporters were ejected from the stadium during the season.

Picken's view is strengthened by events at the World Cup in Japan when England supporters received praise for their impeccable behaviour, and many who made the journey to the Far East believe the accommodating approach from Japanese police, officials and fans helped maintain a peaceful environment.

Since Harriers' promotion to the Nationwide League two years ago there have been major security improvements, including increased stewarding and the installation of CCTV for the average 3,000 attendance.

Police presence had also been stepped up for games deemed high risk.

However, with only one arrest last season and stewards undergoing extra training, Picken believes the eight matches designated high-risk for this season could be reduced.
