A LIGHT has been shone on many of Bewdley's dark and mysterious nooks and crannies in a new video.

Hidden Bewdley is the brainchild of Kenneth Hobson, vice-president of the town's civic society, who researched and filmed a host of intriguing little-known features for the 40-minute tape.

Shot both indoors and outside, the video exposes some astonishing historical features in people's houses and provides a fresh slant on many public spots people may not have noticed.

But the RSPCA might have one or two things to say if one of the more unusual features was still in use today.

Part of the video takes a look at Wribbenhall's Dog Wheel House, which still contains - you've guessed it - a dog wheel. Kenneth Hobson in Bewdley with his new video.

In Victorian times the hapless hound would be required to walk in the wheel, getting absolutely nowhere but in the process turning a spit to cook meat.

And a mysterious tunnel which goes down into the ground before ending with a face carved into a rock wall provides footage for one of the more adventurous items on the tape.

Mr Hobson said its location will be revealed to viewers of the video, which is available from Fagins in Kidderminster and Bewdley Books in Load Street.

He added he was aware of so many "amazing" things in the old town a sequel is a possibility.

"The video will appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of Bewdley.

"I had the idea when I gave a slide show about four years ago but it has greatly expanded since then. You can do so much more with a camera and moving pictures."

Putting the tape together was a lengthy process; Mr Hobson wrote the script and had to get permission to film in people's houses at suitable times. When he had completed filming it was professionally edited.

But he is happy with the finished product, which also looks at inscriptions on the outside of buildings and "tucked away" spots.

He also filmed at the top of the tower at St Anne's Church in Load Street - a dramatic experience.

Mr Hobson said: "It's incredible - when the bells are ringing it rocks. It's just like being in a storm!"

Proceeds from the sale of the video priced £7.99 will go to Bewdley Civic Society.
